Despite a venue change and last-minute cancellations by John Mayer, Christina Aguilera and Anita Baker, the tribute went on as planned and opened with a video message from President Barack Obama, reports the BBC.
“Thank you, Prince, for all the great works you have done,” he said. “You will be in our hearts forever.”
The concert included performances and speeches by the late singer’s friends, family, collaborators and former bandmates. R&B act Mint Condition performed “America,” “DMSR,” and “When Doves Cry,” while pop stars Jessie J sang “Nothing Compares 2 U” and Nicole Scherzinger covered “Nasty Girl” and “Baby I’m a Star.”
Chaka Khan and Wonder shared the stage for a duet of “I Feel for You” off Prince’s debut album, and Wonder played harmonica. Then they launched into a rousing performance of “1999.” Watch a clip of their performance below.
