If Prince had not passed away on April 21, he reportedly would have started a confidential emergency addiction treatment program the following day. Prince’s representatives contacted Dr. Howard Kornfield, a California doctor specializing in opioid addiction, in the hopes of helping the musician.

His reps initially reached out to Kornfield on April 20, because they believed Prince “was dealing with a grave medical emergency,” according to Kornfield’s attorney William Mauzy (via the Star Tribune).

Kornfield oversees the program Recovery Without Walls in Mill Valley, Calif., and, as a result of that call, was set to visit Prince on April 22 because he couldn’t get to Minnesota any sooner. Instead, he sent his son Andrew ahead to begin informing Prince about the nature of the confidential service. “The plan was to quickly evaluate his health and devise a treatment plan,” Mauzy said. The doctor was planning on a lifesaving mission.”

Sadly, that initial conversation never took place. Andrew arrived on the morning of April 21, but when he reached Paisley Park, Prince’s reps could not find him. When they did discover him in the elevator, he was already unconscious. According to Mauzy, it was Andrew who made the 911 call because Prince’s reps was too distraught.
