By Jonathan Hailey

Artists have been covering Prince since long before his passing. His music has left indelible marks on fellow songwriters eager to express their gratitude and worship. Out of the many tributes to Prince over the years, here are five of the best.

Adam Levine – “Purple Rain”

Prince is one of pop rock singer Adam Levine’s inspirations. During Howard Stern’s 60 birthday party in 2014, he performed His Royal Badness’ signature hit “Purple Rain.” Levine impressively nails the guitar solo.

Chris Cornell – “Nothing Compares 2 U”

Singer Chris Cornell strayed away from covering Prince’s “Purple Rain” in favor of the somber “Nothing Compares 2 U.” He performed his smoky cover of the song, which was originally made a hit in 1990 by Irish singer-songwriter Sinead O’Connor.

Tori Kelly – “When Doves Cry”

Pop newcomer Tori Kelly honored The Purple One on the night of his death by taking his infectious dance hit “When Doves Cry” and turning it into a brooding torch song. Although Kelly only performs the chorus, she leaves the audience spellbound with her vocal prowess.

The Cast of “Hamilton” – “Let’s Go Crazy”

Prince not only pushed music forward, but he did so with dance as well. The cast of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton celebrated that with their tribute to Prince. The cast began by reciting the opening to “Let’s Go Crazy” and let the music overtake their bodies afterwards.

Bruce Springsteen – “Purple Rain”

Springsteen is a rock legend and he showed his respect for Prince by opening his April 23rd concert in Brooklyn with a stirring rendition of “Purple Rain.” It doesn’t get much better than The Boss singing this classic.
